Mississippi River Measure - 1970
Action/Performance Sculpture.
Photo documentation by Lorna Frady
Completed in February 1970 on the Mississippi River at La Moille, Minnesota. The artist measured the width of the frozen river by lying face down, stretching as far as possible and placing a twig marker in the ice. After securing the marker, Welch moved forward, placing his feet at the mark and stretched to place another twig in the ice. This process was repeated for a total of 189 times to determine a sculpture of twigs across the river.
