Oakland Cemetery - 1970
Performance, Barbecued Spare Ribs, Super-8 Film.
Location: Grave of Helen Gentile Miller and William G. Miller, Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, New York.
At the grave of Welch's maternal Grandfather and Grandmother, the artist served a group of friends barbecued spare ribs. The bones left over were arranged in a circle at the grave site. At the end of the day, they were gathered for an exhibition scheduled to open a few weeks later at the Steel Gallery in Bridgehampton. Arranged alongside a looped projection of the filmed performance, they formed the sculptural element of the installation.
