Review(s) on Portrait of Sigmund Freud, 1978

Subconscious Sculpture
Welch’s new territory was essentially the pre-conceptual, the irrational, subconscious imagery that the mind sorts through prior to arriving at rigorous, rational thought. Though Welch might be described as a Post-Conceptualist, the Pre-Conceptual is actually his arena. Perhaps it would be most accurate to call him an applied conceptualist.
Subconscious Sculpture by Jeffrey Deitch from Roger Welch exhibition catalogue, Museo d’Art Moderno, Mexico City 1980.
