Cell - 1970

Cinder Blocks, cement, Super-8 Film, mixed media.
Performed at the Cheltenham Art Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The artist lived for three days prior to the opening of the exhibition inside an 8 x 8 x 8 feet cemented concrete room built within the Cheltenham Art Center. On the third day, during the opening reception, a film of a mouse trying to escape from an earthen pit was projected on a wall of the cell while the artist was cutting and chiseling through it from the inside until he broke through and emerged. The concrete structure with broken wall, tools and objects used by Welch remained for the duration of the exhibition.
