Chapel Hill Pediment - 2002
84 feet x 12 feet x 2 1/2" inches, in 16 sections
Wood, canvas, gesso, acrylic and oil stick
While a visiting artist at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2002, Welch created a work combining the structure of the Parthenon pediment with painted depictions of Chapel Hill residential architecture. The overall triangular shape was designed to fit the height and four walls of the University’s Alcott Art Gallery. The dimensions of the work, 84 feet long and 12 feet high, were scaled to 1/3 of Parthenon pediment. Images of houses proliferated un work until they overlapped in a vortex as if falling into a black hole.
